The wage gap across the United States is a serious problem. After so many years of fighting for equality and all the strides that have been made there is still one area that is severely lacking in the form of equality throughout all genders. The gap between the hourly wage and take-home pay is a crisis in America that is hurting countless families. Women from all walks of life are doing the same if not more work as men do and they are getting less pay just because of their gender. In most cases there are no differences in the number of hours worked or the status of the position. The wage gap is based solely on the difference in gender. With more and more women entering the workforce in this new modern era and more importantly entering jobs that are of high status, how are we expected to uphold high standards whenever they do not make as much as their male counterparts? In the attached video Hannah Bowles describes the hard reality that women face when entering the workforce. It is on average that women make 20% less of what men do when they both work their full-time hours. During this video she goes on to break down and describe where exactly those 20 cents go that woman do not see in their paycheck. For her first point she brings up a lack of experience.  When a worker is more experienced, they can ask for more on their hourly wage and be able to get more opportunities in the workforce. She goes on into detail about the hardship of being a woman in society and how having a family makes things difficult to have the same number of years of experience that a man does when working a full-time job when it comes to having to juggle your work life while still being there for your children to them grow and to care for them. She also points out that there is starting to be less and less of a difference in the number of men to women ratio regarding having a degree. This leads us into our second point and stating how most of the jobs that women are working are not as high paying as the jobs that men are. Bowles explains that gender segregation of occupations is where men enter certain work fields while women enter others. Women have a natural ability to care for those in need. Therefore, there is such a high number of women who are in the caregiving service ranging from teachers to babysitters. One aspect that she pointed out in this video is the annual pay of lawyers. In this study there was one aspect that was different from men to women and that was their willingness to be on call or work extended hours. This ties back into the first portion of how women have more commitments than men do, and this hurts them when it comes to the aspect of availability for a full-time job. Lastly, the remaining point is seven cents lost by women is due to discrimination. There are many ways that women can be discriminated against in the workplace. For the last portion of this video, she goes on to describe a woman, Lilly Ledbetter, who worked hard in a management position for Goodyear Tire, but she found out she was getting paid far less than the lowest paid man was being paid for the same work she was performing. She then goes on to describe how there are several factors that contribute to this. One of the most important is how when there is no clear structure of organizational levels and pay scales based on corporate levels then the aspect of opinion becomes a problem when trying to make the same amount as a man. The Pay Gap in the United States is only hurting the American people. It is a serious problem that is still being considered in the new decade that we have entered. Without some form of change then women will continue to enter the workforce at high rates and still make on average 20 cents less than what a man would.
